A passion for the arts and a rose…

It was 1981 when my sister-in-law returned from an awesome date. Wanting to send him flowers to say thank you and express her interest, she wielded the ever-present yellow pages. Not finding what she wanted, her question, born of frustration was, “It’s 1981, why doesn’t anyone send flowers to men?”

Flowers, what a perfect medium for me…

At a very early age it was evident God had blessed me with a strong artistic creative gene. Schooled in drawing, painting, inlay jewelry, pottery, theater, and interior design, the idea of designing flowers for men was immediately intriguing to me. With no examples to follow, I could create a complete new innovative line of gift giving.

And so it began…

Right then and there. We did what anybody with passion and a great idea does, we barreled full steam ahead! My sister-in-laws business background was helpful in acquiring all the necessary licenses to open the shop. We then took out a print ads in the community papers, advertised on the back page of the New Times and a little radio advertising. .

Our first years we grew slowly in both flower knowledge and sales. Local wholesale houses, trade shows and industry magazines provided the information we needed to learn the proper processing and storing of all flowers to ensure their freshness. As for continued advertising, that was easy – word of mouth. Then with every delivery we made, the receptionist received a rose in exchange for tacking up a flier. That was a win-win no one could resist!

And we grew…

With every request, we grew in knowledge and size. Industrial coolers, extra shelving for storage and larger space for design tables became necessary, so we moved the business into a larger space, where we have remained to this day. In 1983 we were commissioned for our first wedding. It was an exciting time of growth and learning the skills required to correctly compose all phases of designing.

Why have we grown and survived the decades? We said yes. It is that simple. With every customer request, we said yes. When people found out we listened, we created, and we satisfied, they never left Flowers For Him. Not only did we become their florist for life, we currently serve the third generation of many families. We have seen them through their first dates, weddings, anniversaries, new baby arrivals and now, their babies weddings.

Today…

We continually hone our skills, keeping up with the latest current trends. We still believe the flowers should first and foremost be a representation of the message conveyed, whether it’s “I love you”, “Thinking of you” or “Congratulations”. Most importantly, my personal connection with our customers is always a priority, their satisfaction is part of my joy. Flowers For Him is a success because we know who we are and never pretend to be anything else! I look forward to greeting every new customer with appreciation, and ushering in the fourth generation of Flowers For Him patrons as we continue to say yes! My passion for creating beautiful art is still prominent, and my desire to be the in the middle of the giver and the receiver, a blessing for which I am grateful to each and every patron I have served through the years.
